New driver’s car insurance

Passing your driving test opens up a whole new world of freedom and convenience however it is a world that is also full of difficulties and dangers especially for new drivers. New and young drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident and make a car insurance claim than more experienced, older drivers. In fact according to statistics released by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) in 2008, 18 year olds alone are involved in 50 collisions a day on British roads – that’s 3 times more than drivers in their fifties.

The right tuition is of course key to preparing new drivers, not just for their driving test, but for the rigours of the road. Before getting behind the wheel it is important that you have checked that the vehicle is safe to drive, has a valid MOT and you have an adequate car insurance policy.

The importance of finding the right policy

As a new driver you are statistically more likely to make a claim, so it is even more important that your insurance policy does not let you down when you need it most. Be sure to read all the small print of your policy to ensure that you understand what you are covered for and what you are not. Ensure you look at the policy exclusions and policy excesses, both voluntary and compulsory, as it’s likely they will be higher for new or young drivers.

You should also consider the level of cover you actually require. Comprehensive cover does offer the most cover but is also the most expensive so if you drive a vehicle which is only worth a couple of hundred pounds then you should probably look at the other options available. These include third party and third party, fire and theft. These offer less protection but will reduce your premium.

What are the options for new and young drivers?

According to Sainsbury’s Car Insurance Index, 17 – 24 years will pay on average three times more on their car insurance than those aged 40 or over. There is good news however for young drivers as there are several insurance providers who offer policies with special features and discounts including:

17 – 24 Car Insurance – Includes policies for provisional and first time drivers with a Pass Plus discount up to 20%.

The AA – Includes discounts up to 35% for completing a Pass Plus course.

Collingwood Learner Driver Insurance – Designed so that learners can insure themselves in the vehicles they are learning in, for as little as a week.

Endsleigh – Covers provisional drivers, includes up to a 20% Pass Plus discount and has the option to earn a no-claims discount in your own name. It is the only insurer fully endorsed by the NUS.

Norwich Union – Features a rapid bonus scheme with which new drivers aged 17 – 29 can earn a full year’s no claims bonus in nine months.

Before you purchase any policy it is important to shop around and compare car insurance quotes using a comparison website.
